John Strand: The Beacon of Cybersecurity – Inspiring, Innovating, and Teaching

John Strand is a highly respected figure in the field of cybersecurity. His years of experience have been characterized by a drive to make cybersecurity knowledge more accessible and practical. This has culminated in various endeavors such as his Anti-Siphon training program, a pay-what-you-can initiative, which has significantly contributed to democratizing cybersecurity education.

His work goes beyond training programs, extending to numerous webinars and trade shows where he shares his expertise and engages with other professionals in the field. One such event was the 2023 Right of Boom conference, a cybersecurity event purpose-built for MSPs (Managed Service Providers). The conference aimed to empower MSPs to understand and implement the people, process, and technology needed to become cyber resilient, while driving both growth and profitability within organizations. This event attracted over 500 attendees, including CEOs, CISOs, vCIOs, CTOs, and security professionals from “security-first” MSPs and MSSPs.

At this conference, John Strand was not only an instructor for his Backdoors and Breaches incident response game but also delivered a talk about “Right of Boom” and showcased some impressive open source tools. One of the highlights of the conference was the hands-on labs conducted by John Strand and Black Hills Information Security, which included RFID Attacks, Mouse/Keyboard Jacking, and a Bluetooth Low Energy Lab. These labs provided practical, hands-on learning experiences for the participants, demonstrating John’s commitment to engaging and effective cybersecurity education.

I personally had the pleasure of sitting in on his class the first night of the conference where he discussed his incident response game “Backdoors and Breaches”. John has not only given this card game away at almost every conference he’s attended, but also hosts a website where you can play the digital version for free. Additionally he provides you the code to host this game yourself and even gives you the permission to change the images to your own company logo.

John’s contribution to the conference went beyond his initial address. He further delved into the subject of ‘right of boom’ scenarios, emphasizing the importance of educating personnel and deploying effective tools (many of them open-source) to ensure client safety. His sessions provided practical strategies to mitigate the daunting array of cybersecurity threats present in today’s digital landscape.

John’s webinars invariably draw large, engaged audiences – a testament to his captivating presence and deep expertise. Personally, I never miss an opportunity to hear him speak, and I urge you to do the same. Whether it’s attending one of his webinars or enrolling in his exceptional SOC courses, you’re in for a rich learning experience that I assure you will not regret.

In conclusion, John Strand’s contributions to the cybersecurity industry are vast and impactful, characterized by his dedication to making cybersecurity knowledge accessible and practical. His efforts have empowered many professionals and organizations in the field, truly embodying the spirit of fostering growth and resilience in cybersecurity.

As a technology enthusiast with over 30 years of experience in the field, I have developed a deep passion for computer security. My interest in this field began at a young age when I was first introduced to computers through an ancient MS-DOS system, and the very first command I discovered, 'dir', sparked my curiosity and desire to learn more. Throughout my professional career, I have dedicated myself to gaining a comprehensive understanding of hacking and its various techniques, with a particular focus on sharing this knowledge with others. I believe that equipping others with the tools and understanding they need to protect themselves is crucial in today's digital landscape.
